Welcome back to Friday Night Frights! Last week I raved about the original film that started this franchise, and it's a film I would recommend to any horror fan in a heartbeat. This week however I believe I saw one of the worst horror films ever made, and if you've been following me for a while you know I don't take saying things like this lightly. I sincerely hope the rest of the franchise is better than this because I truly hated this film, and the fact that Tobe Hooper can go from directing one of the best horror films to one of the worst is baffling to me.

Maybe this was meant to be funny, since some parts come off as poorly done horror comedy, or maybe it was actually meant to be scary, but I can tell you that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is neither of those things. It has two modes: boring and absurd. It also so obviously tries to outdo the original, at which it fails miserably because it lacks any kind of tension, suspence, grittiness, or style. It even tries to take on the incredibly disturbing dinner scene from the first movie which turns into complete farce topped off by dueling chainsaws. Yes, dueling chainsaws.

The only positive I can point out is Caroline Williams as Stretch, though she is still no Marilyn Burns. Otherwise, it was really difficult to care about anything that was going on or anyone who was on screen. The visual effects may be something that could have passed in the 80s, but they certainly don't hold up now, the writing and characters aren't really worth mentioning, and even the music feels very uninspired.

As you can tell, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is not a film I can recommend to anyone. Whatever it was meant to be just doesn't work, and it's particularly disappointing after the original film.
