Top 5 Star Wars Movies (So Far)

Top 5 Star Wars Movies (So Far)

Another year, another Star Wars film, though this one isn't part of the "Episodes"—Rogue One is the first of the anthology movies, and takes place right before Episode IV. There has been a lot of hype and anticipation surrounding it, as well as the question "how will this rank next to the rest of the franchise?" Today, I thought I would share my raking of the top 5 Star Wars films (you can see how I rank the bottom three on my Letterboxd list)

5. Rogue One (2016)

Well, the good news is that Rogue One DID make it into my top 5, but just barely. While I did think this one was definitely better than the prequels, I really couldn't rank it above the original trilogy or The Force Awakens. It's a Star Wars film I enjoyed watching but didn't love, something I was glad to see on the big screen but don't really feel the immediate urge to see again. I do have a full review of Rogue One on my channel, so if you want to know my detailed thoughts—check out the video.

4. Return of the Jedi (1983)

A potentially controversial opinion, since I know Return of the Jedi is actually a favorite for a lot of people, but for me this is the most flawed film of the original trilogy. Some of the pacing is off, some of the scenes feel unnecessary, but still there are some outstanding character interactions, exciting action, and it's a very worthy ending to the story arc of the original movies.

3. The Force Awakens (2015)

This film will always be special to me because it's the first Star Wars movie I saw on the big screen, and I had so much fun that I actually went to see it again the same weekend. Memorable characters, engaging story, stunning visuals—The Force Awakens had it all, though it may have relied a bit too much on previous movies. I did have some small nitpicks with this one, but overall I loved it, and you can find out more in my review.

2. A New Hope (1977)

The original Star Wars film may not be perfect (though it's close), but the magic is undeniable. It's the film that started it all, and introduced the world to this exciting new universe along with one of the most iconic villains ever seen on screen. And it also made me fall in love with Han Solo - one of my favorite, sassy anti-heroes.

1. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

I don't think any of the upcoming Star Wars films can possibly top this one for me. I love everything about it: the story, the visuals, the characters, the intrigue, the epic scope, the iconic scenes, and it's definitely one of my favorite movies of all time.

Well, this was my Star Wars top 5! What does yours look like?
