Superhero Movies That Are Worth Your Time
With the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron this weekend, I thought it was the perfect time to talk about some of my favorite superhero movies and franchises. As much as I wanted to put The Crow on this list (as it's one of my most favorite films EVER), I couldn't really list Eric Draven as a superhero—he's a vigilante on a killing spree, an antihero who is one step away from being a villain. Maybe I'll do a favorite antiheroes post at some point, and you best believe The Crow will be on top of it, but today let's talk about superheroes.
I never knew I loved X-Men until I saw X-Men: First Class. The original trilogy is something that I didn't connect with at all, and these days I kind of pretend that it doesn't exist, but the two new films blew me away. Amazing cast, engaging stories, and beautiful visuals! After seeing X-Men: First Class I didn't think the sequel could live up to it, but I loved X-Men: Days of Future Past and its characters even more. Though I enjoyed everything about these movies, my favorite moments always have to do with Magneto and Professor X, especially if the scene involves the two of them interacting.
Iron Man was the first superhero movie I actually loved. Before I saw Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, I was under the impression that superheroes and comic books were not really my thing. Never have I been so wrong! I think this is the best movie to watch if you are new to the genre: it's fun, it's about a genius billionaire playboy with a wicked sense of humor, you don't need to know anything about superheroes or comic books to enjoy it, and you just can't go wrong with Robert Downey Jr. Sadly, I don't think the other two movies lived up to this one, but I guarantee it will make you want more Tony Stark in your life.
This is a movie that took me by surprise last year. It went from "that one superhero movie" I didn't know if I would even see to one of my favorite films of 2014. If you haven't seen Guardians of the Galaxy because it's about a team you've never even heard of, you need to drop everything a watch it. Not only does it have gorgeous visuals, unique characters, and a perfect cast—it's also hilarious. And don't even get me started on the soundtrack. I never thought a talking homicidal raccoon and a tree that only says one phrase could be amazing characters.
Now, I think Christopher Nolan's entire Batman trilogy is excellent, but The Dark Knight is on a whole other level. Of course, this has a lot to do with Heath Ledger as the Joker—I was terrified and awed at the same time. But as a whole, this film is one of the best things Christopher Nolan has done, complete with a beautiful soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. I actually watched this before I watched Batman Begins (blame Batman & Robin for me completely losing my interest in Batman), and I never expected it to be so dark or leave such a lasting impression on me.
The Avengers (2012) + Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Of course, I couldn't leave out the Avengers movies! Marvel has been on a roll with films during the past few years, and it doesn't seem like they have any intentions of slowing down. Yes, these movies are much more action-driven than anything else on this list, but seeing iconic superheroes come together is a treat. I mean, they have Robert Downey Jr. back as Iron Man, and The Avengers has Tom Hiddleston as Loki. What else do you need? Both movies are a lot of fun to watch, and anyone who enjoys action comedy is going to like them. I actually just did a full review of Avengers: Age of Ultron on my YouTube channel, so you should check it out if you want to know more about it:
